Sirolimus: A Promising Natural Anti-Cancer Drug

In Uncategorized on August 8, 2012 at 11:34 pm

Sirolimus is a drug with a fascinating history. It was discovered by researchers looking for novel drugs from natural sources. They discovered it on famous Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean. You may remember Easter Island as the one with the ancient and enigmatic giant carved heads, looking out to sea. The researchers found this novel chemical in a bacterium on the island. It is similar to penicillin, as they are both naturally occurring substances that can be used as medicines.

Initial testing of Sirolimus revealed that it has multiple effects that are useful medicinally. It is an anti=fungal agent. It can be used as an immune system in patients where this is required, and perhaps most significantly, it was shown to have effects against cancer.

Unfortunately, its uses as a cancer therapy have been “shelved” and it is now used for other purposes. Why? It appears that Sirolimus, like many other natural cancer medications, is unable to compete in the regulatory and commercial markets against the established chemotherapy and radiation treatments for serious cancers.

Let’s applaud those clinicians and researchers who continue delving into the complex medicinal effects of this natural substance called Sirolimus.
